  • Best of Hutto Spotlight: Dance-N-Groove – Teaching Dance, Confidence, and Life Skills Since 2005

For nearly two decades, Dance-N-Groove  has been more than just a place to learn pliés and pirouettes. It's a second home for young dancers in Hutto, a studio where life skills are taught in rhythm, and confidence grows with every eight-count. More Than Dance, It’s a Mission Dance-N-Groove offers classes for ages 1 to 18 , including Parent & Me, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary. But what truly sets this studio apart isn’t just the lineup of styles, it’s the heart behind the movement. “At Dance-N-Groove, we teach more than dance,” the owner, Ms. Kirstin, says. “We teach life skills, instill confidence, and pour into our students’ lives, helping them grow both as dancers and  as individuals.” From Teaching Dreams to Dance Floors The journey to launching Dance-N-Groove didn’t start with a dance degree or a business plan, it started with a passion for teaching . “I was on my way to earning my teaching degree when the opportunity to open Dance-N-Groove came along,” the founder shares. “I’ve always loved helping others grow, and this gave me the perfect avenue to combine my love of education and the arts.” And Hutto? That was a no-brainer. Hometown Hippo Pride Dance-N-Groove held its very first class on February 1, 2005 . For the founder, Hutto isn’t just where the business is, it’s home . “I’ve lived here since 1994 and graduated from Hutto High School. When we opened, the city was just starting to grow. And it hasn’t stopped since.” One of the most special parts of running a business in Hutto? The hippos. No, really. “Hutto’s mascot, the Hippo, isn’t just for the schools. It represents the whole town. That sense of community and pride is something truly unique.” A Legacy of Confidence and Growth Over the past 20+ years, Dance-N-Groove has seen thousands of dancers pass through its doors. The most memorable moments? “Watching a shy, unsure student transform into a confident, empowered dancer never gets old. That kind of growth is what keeps me going.” The studio has become a cherished part of many families’ lives, and often, those relationships continue well beyond the dance floor. “I still run into former students and families all over town. Getting to stay connected and watch them grow up is a gift.” Advice for New Hutto Entrepreneurs For anyone looking to launch a business in Hutto, the founder offers some wise words: “Understand that Hutto is growing, fast. There’s a lot of diversity and new energy moving in. Embrace the change, connect with people, and offer something that brings real value to the community. Relationships matter here.” Life Outside the Studio When this business owner isn’t leading the next generation of dancers, you’ll likely find her on mom duty, volunteering at her daughters’ schools, attending events, or popping into the Hutto Public Library  for a fresh stack of books. • Best of Hutto Spotlight: Sweet Daisies Photography, Capturing Life, Love, and Legacy in Hutto

Some photographs are just pictures. Others become treasured memories , the kind you pass down, frame, cry over, or smile at on your toughest days. That’s the kind of photography Jillian Schmuhl creates through her business, Sweet Daisies Photography . Jillian isn’t just a portrait and lifestyle photographer. She’s a storyteller, capturing the heartbeats behind the smiles, the laughter between the poses, and the love that connects generations. A Lens with Purpose So, what sets Sweet Daisies Photography apart? “I understand how important capturing our loved ones truly is,” Jillian says. “I don’t take that responsibility lightly. I want to give my clients memories that last lifetimes, not just photos.” Each session Jillian shoots is deeply rooted in meaning, and that connection is what makes her work resonate so strongly with clients. A Father’s Words, A Daughter’s Dream Jillian’s journey into photography wasn’t just about passion, it was about purpose. “I’ve been drawn to photography since I was a little girl, but it wasn’t until after my father passed away that I decided to make it my career. One of the last conversations I had with him was about pursuing a job that let me use my talents and creativity.” Out of that bittersweet encouragement, Sweet Daisies Photography  was born, named after a song her dad used to sing to her: “I’ll give you a daisy a day, dear.” It’s more than a business. It’s a tribute. Six Years and Counting in Hutto Sweet Daisies Photography has been capturing cherished moments for six years  now, and Jillian couldn’t imagine being based anywhere else but Hutto. “This is home for my family,” she says. “We’ve lived here since 2013, and the sense of community and pride here is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.” Jillian first found her footing in Hutto through local mom groups, where she met a supportive circle of women who helped one another grow, personally and professionally. Moments That Matter Of all the highlights from her photography career, one moment stands out the most: “I received a message from a past client who had lost a loved one. They told me how much those photos meant to them, how they were some of the last professional images ever taken. That reminded me why I do what I do.” For Jillian, each session is a chance to freeze time, honor relationships, and hold space for the people we love most. Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Starting a business? Jillian has one big piece of advice. “Don’t be afraid to reach out. Connect with those who’ve been where you are. Learn from your community instead of seeing them as competition.” In Hutto, she says, there’s enough success to go around, and more than enough support if you’re willing to ask for it. Favorite Spots Around Town When Jillian isn’t behind the camera, you can find her enjoying everything Hutto has to offer, from the Hutto General Store  to local events like Olde Tyme Days , the Farmers Market , or Hutto’s Christmas celebration . “I love spending time with my family and supporting local businesses. This town has such heart.” What’s Next for Sweet Daisies? As Jillian continues to grow her business, her focus remains the same, serving families with authenticity, heart, and intention . “Thank you to everyone in Hutto who supports small businesses like mine. It truly means the world.” Want to book a session or learn more about Sweet Daisies Photography?🌼 Follow along on social media and visit Sweet Daisies Photography  to capture your next memory. 📸 Because life moves fast, and the moments you’ll want to remember deserve to last forever. Since 2009, I’ve also served as a Member Director on the Travis County–Creedmoor Municipal Utility District , continuing my long-standing commitment to public service and responsible growth. How did your journey as a business owner begin? What inspired you to get started? When Donna and I moved to Hutto in 1978 right after we got married, we had just purchased our first home together on West Live Oak Street in Hutto Old Town (HOT). The home was previously owned by my great-aunt, great-grandparents, Hutto Lutheran Church as their first parsonage, and the Hutto family going back to 1876.   I was working for the Texas House of Representatives and Donna was in Pharmacy School at the University of Texas. We had little money at the time and our home was considered to be a tear-down by many of the old-time locals of Hutto. Our desire was to fix it up and preserve its history, which we accomplished together over 46 years. This also prompted me to enter the real estate profession as a part-time endeavor in 1982 to help provide additional income for our family and to help landowners achieve maximum money for the property sales. Why did you choose Hutto as your home base? I have long loved Hutto! It was the opportunity, affordability to live here, be close to my then job(s) in Austin and Pharmacy School for Donna. Our passion to make our home and new to us community a better place. Attached below is what I have done or helped do to make Hutto a better community and place to live, work and play. Things that I have done for the betterment of our Hutto community! In 1978, my wife, Donna, and I moved to Hutto with the mindset of living here, fixing up an old Victorian home at 108 West Live Oak Street that we purchased and that many locals considered to be a teardown. We have both worked towards continually improving our community and home for over the past 46 years. 1965-1970: I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts in Government with course work emphasis on public administration, Texas government, and international relations from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, later utilizing my knowledge and experience for the good of Hutto. Beginning in 1979, while Ed Schmidt was Mayor, as a City Councilman I wrote the initial protective ordinances enacted by the City of Hutto including Subdivision Ordinance, Zoning Ordinance, Building Code Ordinance, Parkland Dedication Ordinance, Clean Lot Ordinance, and expansion of our extra territorial jurisdiction through voluntary inclusion. 1984-Present: I became a Licensed Texas Real Estate Broker and owner of TEX US Real Estate and Investments; providing real estate, consulting services and investment opportunities primarily in Hutto, Williamson and surrounding Texas counties. Working extensively with property owners and buyers to address development issues in Hutto and Central Texas. Have helped to sell many multi-million-dollar properties in Texas and developed Hutto for more than four decades through contracts and location of private, public, and commercial properties specializing in the sale of land for subdivisions and commercial projects. I have sold land mostly for the farmers/owners (the owner has one opportunity to sell and achieve the best price possible for their property and I assist in making that occur). These properties have become or will be subdivisions, commercial, or institutional improvements within the City of Hutto as follows: Brooklands (for Farley family to Jim Sackrider, eventually went to developers). Brushy Creek Meadows. (for Ms. Davenport). Country Estates (for Dahl family). Creekside Estates (for Simmons family). Glenwood (for Blackman family). Mager Meadows (for Mager family). Farley family farm (for Farley family). Gola family farm (for Gola Family). Bigon family farm (for Bigon family). Lidell family farm (for Lidell family). Walker family farm (for Walker-Davis family). Commercial properties – Dale Alley. Bob Castle, Anthony Dobias, Harold Eubanks, Home Depot, Dan Heil & Chien Lee, Don Quick, Rabb family, Jim Smith, City of Hutto, Hutto I.S.D., Hutto Fire Rescue District, Hutto Chamber of Commerce, Hutto Lutheran Church, and helped many other non-profits and commercial businesses. Provided the local names and worked with a developer Terry Boyd, and city planner Joan Hardy, in naming of streets for long-time Hutto families in the Legends of Hutto and Hutto Square, did not sell properties.  Also worked closely with city planner Joan Hardy, on naming of streets in Hutto Parke, did not sell land. I had the vision as Mayor to purchase the Hutto Co-op properties for the City of Hutto at a cost of $2,050,000 including commission paid to Don Quick & Associates for future use as a City Hall anchor and destination commercial-heritage development. Had the vision as Mayor to purchase property and build a temporary City Hall for the City of Hutto on Front Street that now serves as the Police Department and Animal Control offices. Had the vision to facilitate the relocation of the United States Postal Office from East Street twice to better serve the people of Hutto, first to US 79 and then to its present location on Exchange Boulevard. Had the vision to convince Williamson County to purchase and build their first County office facility in the City of Hutto, first on Exchange Boulevard and then moved to Ed Schmidt Boulevard. I achieved my Texas Real Estate Brokers License taking six core courses from Austin Community College in Finance, Appraisals, Principles of Real Estate, Leasing, Real Estate Law, and Property Management: I have also attended many real estate conferences and seminars as well as completing Mandatory Continuing Education real estate courses every two years. In 2010 and 2012 completed several Home Builders Association of Greater Austin “Green Boot” programs, a twelve-segment green building course with six additional field trips and also their advanced green building program. Did a green building blog on new and better building products and practices for about five years to people primarily in Central Texas. I continue to try to improve Hutto through my real estate skill sets and learn every day. General Contractor directing all phases of construction and permitting of our 1876 Victorian home addition at 108 West Live Oak Street in 1994, building my home office/garage in 2007, renovating and building my historic office building at 106 East Street in 1985, and building greenhouses in 2009 and 2021, and renovating adjacent properties from 2017 to 2024. I have saved numerous local historical structures from demolition and have also advised people on many other local homes and associated business projects. Wrote the initial Parkland Dedication Ordinance for the City of Hutto. • Best of Hutto Spotlight: Bluebonnets Shaved Ice – Serving Up Joy, One Flavor at a Time

In the heart of Hutto, there’s a little stand that does more than just serve shaved ice, it serves smiles, stories, and summer memories . For the past five years, Bluebonnets Shaved Ice  has been the go-to spot for bold flavors, handmade syrups, and that "ahh, I needed this"  kind of refreshment. Every cup is made with love, right down to the smallest detail. All flavors are handcrafted in-house, ensuring each one is bold, balanced, and bursting with joy. From the water used to the playlist bumping in the background, quality and fun  are at the heart of everything they do. 💬 “We want every visit to feel like a mini celebration, whether it’s a kid’s after-school treat or a parent’s five-minute escape from a busy day.” Tell us a little about your business. What do you offer, and what makes it unique?    At Bluebonnets, we serve shaved ice made with love and high-quality ingredients. Every single flavor is handmade by me to make sure it lives up to our standards—bold, balanced, and full of joy.  Quality is at the heart of everything we do, from the water we use to the care we take with every step of the process. Just as important is fun—we want every visit to feel like a mini celebration. Whether it’s a kid getting their favorite after-school treat or a parent taking a moment to breathe, we’re here to brighten their day.  Behind the scenes, we run a tight ship. Operational excellence might sound serious, but to us, it means being prepared, consistent, and creating a smooth, friendly experience from start to finish. We believe kindness is our secret ingredient—and when you mix that with quality, fun, and a team that genuinely cares, you get something truly special.  How did your journey as a business owner begin? What inspired you to get started?   To be totally up front, it started with sadness. I graduated college in 2007, found a job in Florida in my field, and realized... this was not for me. This was so utterly depressing and there was no way to make it better.  My boyfriend (now husband) and I went out looking for some comfort food only to realize there were no snowball (shaved ice) stands to be found.  Welp, that’s all it took. A few weeks later I had my first shaved ice stand and was booking events!   Jump ahead 10 years and we find ourselves in our Hutto home complete with a kid and dog. Those memories stayed with me – the fun I had with my snowball stand way back when. At this time, my kiddo was in school, my husband was rocking at work, and H-E-B Plus was just opening. Boom! There it was – I knew I would have my stand in front and now, we’re in year 5!  I just wanted to build something that made people smile, brought families together, and didn’t require any planning to enjoy.  It turns out that when you combine a love of flavors, a sprinkle of creativity, and a stubborn refusal to raise prices for three years, you get a sweet little business that people keep coming back to.  How long have you been in business, and why did you choose Hutto as your home base?   We’ve been proudly serving up shaved ice in Hutto for five summers now. We chose Hutto because it’s got the small-town feel and personality that just draws you in. There’s a real sense of community here—people wave, they cheer each other on, and they know their neighbors. Plus, Hippos! It felt like the perfect place to buy a house and put down roots.  What’s been one of your most memorable moments as a business owner?    Serving our wonderful community over the years has always been great but some have really touched my heart in a special way. These people, who only know me because they are customers, feel so comfortable with me, so cared for, so genuinely safe, that they share with me some of their families' biggest tragedies' and greatest triumphs. In each of their stories we were able to play a positive role; we have made some of their toughest moments a little easier and some of their happy moments even better. It just brings me to tears thinking, how did I get so lucky to be able to bring them this happy place, this joyful memory that helps them through.  It’s truly humbling to realize that coming to see me and getting a shaved ice can have such an impact on peoples lives.   What do you think makes the Hutto community special?   Hutto is the kind of place where people still care. People show up for each other. Whether it's local football games, small business events, or a neighbor who just needs a hand, this town has heart. Didn’t we just have a home here built in a week on Extreme Makeover?! How amazing was that! It’s also the only place I’ve seen someone eat three shaved ice cups in a row in 100-degree heat and still ask, “What’s your next best flavor?” That’s commitment—and community.  What advice would you give to someone just starting a business here?   Be kind, focus on your values, know your numbers, and don’t let others' opinions and ideas send you off track.  People in Hutto appreciate authenticity and heart. Also, never underestimate the power of good signage and an even better playlist.   When you're not working, where can we find you around town? (Favorite coffee, food, or hangout spots?)   When I’m not working in the trailer, I’ll be working in my office LOL. Now after that, I'll very happily be at Lowes looking for more goodies to fix whatever my next home project is. Casa Jalisco in the Co-op is always great plus getting a malt at Top Notch and chilling outside on the grass is so nice.   Anything exciting coming up you'd like the community to know about?   This summer marks our 5th anniversary , and we’re celebrating all summer! Think giveaways, limited-edition flavors (looking at you, Chantilly), and even a few surprise toppings! We’re also working on making our social media more fun and interactive, so if you ever wanted to be on a shaved ice TikTok, your moment has arrived. As always, we’re just grateful to be part of this incredible community, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s smiling, flavor-stained faces again soon.  Contact Info: Bluebonnets Shaved Ice | 5000 Gattis School Rd, Hutto, TX | Facebook

We started over a year prior to our opening and was looking for and area and location. A lot of Building owners will not lease to game rooms.  Once we set our eyes on Hutto, we found an amazing spot. How long have you been in business, and why did you choose Hutto as your home base? Lucky Hippo opened April 2023.  We chose Hutto because the community is up and coming and needs something that adults can do without leaving town. What’s been one of your most memorable moments as a business owner? A month after we opened, we had our first customer appreciation party. It was standing room only.  At that point we knew we were blessed to be part of Hutto! What do you think makes the Hutto community special? Hippo Pride is not just a mascot, it's a culture.  Not only have we had success with our sweepstakes room, but we have made a lot of great friends. What advice would you give to someone just starting a business here? Get involved!  Go to events, get out and meet people!  Become part of the community and support local organizations and charities. When you're not working, where can we find you around town? (Favorite coffee, food, or hangout spots?) On Wednesday nights you can find me at Fritz Park playing kickball Anything exciting coming up you'd like the community to know about? April 19th, we celebrated our 2nd Birthday with a customer appreciation party! We would love to invite the community to join us for a great evening of fun, games, food, and prizes!
