Hutto Hippos Football 2026 Schedule, Home Games and Season Preview

Friday night football is back in Hutto, Texas, and the Hippos are entering the 2026 season with a new head coach, a challenging schedule and another opportunity to compete for a district championship.

Hutto is coming off a successful 2025 season that included a shared district championship and a Class 6A Division I playoff victory. Now, the Hippos are preparing to face a mixture of familiar rivals and new district opponents under first-year head coach Casey Walraven.

Whether you are a student, parent, former Hippo or Hutto resident who simply loves Texas high school football, here is what you need to know before the season begins.

When Does the Hutto Hippos Football Season Begin?

The Hutto Hippos open the regular season at home against Harker Heights on Friday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be played at Hutto Memorial Stadium and should provide an immediate test for the Hippos. Harker Heights finished the 2025 season with a 9-3 record, went undefeated in district competition and advanced into the playoffs.

Apparently, Hutto decided a gentle warm-up game was unnecessary. Straight into the fire we go.

Hutto Hippos Home Football Games

Hutto will play five regular-season home games at Hutto Memorial Stadium:

  • August 28 against Harker Heights

  • September 18 against Temple

  • October 2 against Vista Ridge

  • October 16 against Leander

  • November 6 against Vandegrift

The home schedule includes several major matchups, but the November 6 game against Vandegrift may be the one everyone circles. Hutto and Vandegrift shared the district championship last season. The Vipers handed the Hippos their only district loss in a 44-34 shootout, making the 2026 rematch a potential championship-deciding game. Translation: do not wait until Friday afternoon to start looking for tickets.

A Challenging Non-District Schedule

Before district competition begins, Hutto will face four established programs:

Harker Heights

The Hippos begin the season against a Harker Heights team that went 9-3 and undefeated in district play in 2025. This matchup should give Hutto an early look at how its experienced roster responds under a new coaching staff.

Converse Judson

Hutto travels to Converse Judson on September 4.

The two programs have developed a competitive non-district series. Hutto defeated Judson 27-14 last season after losing the previous year’s meeting on a last-second field goal.

Copperas Cove

The Hippos remain on the road September 11 to face Copperas Cove. The Bulldawgs narrowly missed the playoffs in 2025 and are expected to present another physical early-season challenge.

Temple

Hutto returns home September 18 to play Temple in its final non-district game. Temple finished 7-4 last season and reached the playoffs before losing to state powerhouse Duncanville.

By the time district play begins, the Hippos should know exactly where they stand. There will be no hiding behind a cupcake schedule here.

Hutto Begins District Competition Against East View

The Hippos open district play on the road against Georgetown East View on September 25.

East View is coming off one of the strongest seasons in its program’s history, finishing second in its district with a 5-2 record. The game could establish early momentum in what promises to be a competitive district race.

Hutto then faces:

  • Vista Ridge at home

  • Cedar Park on the road

  • Leander at home

  • Rouse on the road

  • Vandegrift at home

The Hippos will receive a bye before their final regular-season matchup against Vandegrift.

New Leadership for Hutto Football

Casey Walraven enters the season as Hutto’s new head football coach.

He takes over a program that has built strong expectations and established itself as a serious Central Texas contender. The challenge will be introducing a new coaching culture and system while maintaining the momentum created during last year’s district-championship season.

Fortunately, the new staff will not be starting from scratch.

Hutto returns several experienced contributors, including an explosive receiving group led by Dylan Owens and Jaiden Fields. The returning talent gives the offense continuity and big-play potential as players adjust to the new leadership.

Building on the 2025 Playoff Run

Hutto finished the 2025 regular season as a co-district champion before defeating Austin Bowie 35-28 in the Class 6A Division I bi-district playoffs.

Dylan Owens scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns during that comeback victory, including a 50-yard game-winning run. The Hippos advanced to the area round before their season ended against San Antonio Johnson.

That playoff experience matters. Returning players now know what it takes to win a close postseason game, respond under pressure and compete against highly ranked opponents. The goal for 2026 will not simply be reaching the playoffs. Hutto has the talent and experience to pursue another district title and attempt a deeper postseason run.

Junior Varsity and Freshman Football

The official Hutto Athletics website also includes schedules for:

  • JV Orange

  • JV White

  • Ninth Grade White

These teams provide important opportunities for younger players to develop, gain game experience and prepare for future varsity roles. Supporting the lower-level programs is one of the best ways to see the next generation of Hutto football players before they take the field under the Friday night lights.

Support the Hutto Hippos in 2026

Football season is about more than the final score. It brings students, families, educators, local businesses and longtime residents together. The players may be the ones wearing the uniforms, but the band, cheerleaders, drill team, athletic trainers, coaches, volunteers and fans all contribute to the Friday night experience.

Show up early. Wear orange. Support the students. Cheer loudly, but maybe save your referee résumé for another day. The 2026 schedule will not be easy, but that is exactly what could make this season worth watching.

Let’s go, Hippos! 🦛🏈
