  • How to Safely Flush Your Home’s Plumbing

(And Why It Matters for Water Heaters, Filters, and Appliances, Especially with Hutto Water) If you live in Central Texas, you already know the water can be … enthusiastic . Hard minerals, sediment, and occasional system changes can quietly build up in your pipes. What most people don’t  realize is that flushing your plumbing the wrong  way, or not doing it at all, can seriously damage appliances like washers, dishwashers, water heaters, filters, and softeners. Let’s break this down in plain English and save you from expensive repairs. Why Flushing Your Pipes Matters Over time, your plumbing system collects: Mineral sediment (calcium & magnesium = hard water) Rust or debris from city water lines Scale buildup in heaters and appliances In areas like Hutto, where water hardness is higher than average, this buildup can: Clog appliance valves Reduce water heater efficiency Destroy filter cartridges Shorten the lifespan of dishwashers & washing machines Flushing helps clear out sediment safely , if done correctly . Before You Flush Anything: The Golden Rules This is where most people mess up 👀 Always do these first: Turn OFF your water heater Electric: flip the breaker Gas: set to pilot  or off Bypass water softeners & filtration systems This prevents debris from ruining resin beds and filters Do NOT run appliances during flushing No laundry, no dishwasher, no ice makers Skipping these steps is how filters get wrecked and heaters get clogged. How to Flush Your Home Plumbing Safely Step 1: Start with the Cold Water Lines Turn on the lowest cold-water faucet  in the house (often a tub or outdoor spigot) Let it run for 10–15 minutes Then move floor by floor, opening cold taps briefly This pushes sediment out  instead of into appliances. Step 2: Flush the Hot Water Heater (This Is Huge) Why it matters: Sediment settles at the bottom of the tank and gets sucked into dishwashers and washers when disturbed. How to do it: Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the heater Run the hose outside or to a drain Open the drain valve Let it flush until water runs clear (usually 5–10 minutes) 💡 Pro tip: Do this once a year  in hard water areas. Step 3: Flush Hot Water Lines After the heater is flushed and refilled Turn on hot taps one at a time Let each run a few minutes This clears loosened sediment without blasting it into appliances. What About Water Filters & Softener Systems? This is where people accidentally cause damage. Water Softeners Always put the system in bypass mode  before flushing After flushing: Return to service Run a manual regeneration cycle Sediment can destroy the resin beads if flushed through incorrectly. Whole-Home & Under-Sink Filters Remove or bypass filters before flushing Replace cartridges after  flushing if water was dirty Never flush debris through a brand-new filter (that’s just rude to the filter) Protecting Your Appliances (The Silent Victims) Once flushing is complete: Run empty cycles  on: Dishwasher Washing machine Check appliance inlet screens for debris Replace fridge water filters if flow drops This prevents leftover grit from clogging valves later. How Often Should You Do This in Hutto? With local water conditions: Annual full-system flush : Highly recommended After city water work or outages : Mandatory If you notice cloudy water or pressure changes : Do it ASAP Ignoring these signs can cost way more than the time it takes to flush. Common (Costly) Mistakes to Avoid 🚫 Flushing with the water heater ON 🚫 Forgetting to bypass softeners 🚫 Running appliances during flushing 🚫 Installing new filters before  flushing 🚫 Assuming “clear water” means “clean system” Clear ≠ sediment-free. Final Thought: This Is Preventative Maintenance, Not Overkill Flushing your plumbing isn’t fancy. It won’t go viral on TikTok. But it will : Extend appliance life Improve water pressure Reduce mineral buildup Save you hundreds (or thousands) in repairs If you live in a hard-water area like Hutto, this isn’t optional, it’s smart home ownership. • An illustrated short story: Trains Collide in Hutto, Texas on November 28, 1928

Numerous people were injured and others may have died later because of their injuries resulting from the 1928 Hutto, Texas train wreck that happened about nine football field lengths to the west of the Hutto Depot. Picture and research by Mike Fowler, Updated February 3, 2026 According to the Port Arthur News report of November 28, 1928: “Austin, Nov. 28 (AP) -- The engineer, fireman and a brakeman on I. & G. N. southbound passenger train were injured, probably fatally and at least seven chair car passengers hurt this morning when the train crashed into a freight engine one-half mile west of Hutto. The accident occurred in a dense fog. Both engines were virtually demolished, and track was torn up for more than 150 yards on the main line. The injured included J. G. Smith; Ben Butler; Marvin Cooke and Ed Mayer, all of San Antonio. M. E. Titton of Kansas City, who was said to be on his way to Austin to act as an umpire in the Texas University - Texas Aggie football game tomorrow, also was injured, but the extent of his hurts had not yet been learned. Bonner Frizzell, superintendent of Palestine schools, suffered a fractured shoulder.” As a little lighter sidenote, the University of Texas soundly defeated Texas A&M at Texas Memorial Stadium by a score of 19-0 on November 29, 1928. It is not known if Mr. M. E. Titton of Kansas City was able to referee this game. A second account of this same train wreck was described in a letter written to her aunt from a ten-year-old Hutto 4 th grader, Louise Harkins: “November 28 th , 1928, at 5:30 a.m., a big train happened near Hutto. A bad fog, and the engineer on the freight train ran into a passenger train. It split a freight car in half, and the chickens were running all around the train. They had ice cream, cheese, butter, milk, cream, and chickens all over the ground. No one was killed, but 4 or 5 were hurt.” As an adult, I knew Louise and she and I frequently talked about Hutto history.  Louise Harkins later confirmed this account of the train wreck to me (Mike Fowler). • So, You've Been Laid Off, Now What?

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been laid off in one of the most recent big layoffs (Amazon, Dow, Mastercard, FedEx, etc.) or been impacted by a smaller RIF (reduction in force).  Getting laid off stinks.  The key to survival is not panicking.   I know that’s easier said than done, but let’s break it down to a more manageable plan. Step 1: Give yourself a day or two of grace to react to the new situation (if possible).  Binge Netflix, clean your house, read a book, allow yourself a moment to grieve.  It’s okay to be sad or mad and feel those feelings.  Just remember to QTIP - quit taking it personally because if you do, it’s a fast slide down a rabbit hole you do NOT want to go down.  Just make sure to move to the next step after a few days. Step 2: Make a plan.  Assess your savings and your cost of living.  Take a day to deep dive into expenses and plan for as long as you can.  There are a lot of variables regarding the speed you’ll get rehired, but it’s never bad to know exactly what you need to meet your basic needs.  There’s no shame in taking a temporary job if you need to.  This will help you figure out next steps as well. Step 3: Figure out what you want to do.  Think about the parts about the job you had that you liked and disliked.  Think about your knowledge, skills and abilities; what you bring to the table.  Then go down the rabbit hole and try to find titles for roles that you feel would be a good fit.   Step 4: Write that resume!  Start by getting feedback on what you have to figure out what you need to change (or not).  Break it down into sections; value statement, core competencies, experience, early career if needed and finally education/certifications.  Work on each one at a time and give yourself breaks between.  Make sure it remains focused on your value and impact instead of reading like a job description. Step 5: Build out your plan for applying.  It might be 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.  It might be when your kids are in school.  Make sure you’re using job boards that cater to your career needs as the big 2 (LinkedIn and Indeed) are heavily saturated.  And don’t forget to network both online and in person!  That’s just as important as applying. Losing your job can feel like the end of the world, but it’s a lot easier if you have a plan.  Things will get better, just keep at it.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help and let loved ones know how fast to support you in the ways that you need it. • How to Increase Engagement on Social Media: A Complete SEO Guide for Business Growth

If you’re posting consistently but your likes, comments, shares, and saves are flat … you don’t have an algorithm problem. You have an engagement strategy problem. Social media engagement is not about posting more. It’s about posting smarter. In this guide, you’ll learn proven strategies to increase social media engagement, improve reach, boost visibility, and turn followers into customers across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok. What Is Social Media Engagement? Social media engagement refers to how people interact with your content. This includes: Likes Comments Shares Saves Clicks Direct messages Story replies Poll participation High engagement tells the algorithm your content is valuable, which increases reach and visibility. Low engagement? Your content gets buried. Why Engagement Matters for Growth Increasing engagement on social media helps you: Improve organic reach Build brand authority Strengthen customer trust Increase website traffic Generate leads and sales Improve algorithm performance The algorithm rewards interaction. Period. If people engage, your content spreads. 15 Proven Ways to Increase Social Media Engagement Let’s break down actionable strategies you can implement immediately. 1. Create Content That Sparks Conversation The fastest way to increase engagement is to stop broadcasting and start inviting discussion. Instead of: “Here’s our new product.” Try: “What’s the one feature you wish more businesses offered?” Questions drive comments. Comments drive reach. Use: Open-ended questions Polls “Agree or disagree?” prompts “This or that?” comparisons Engagement loves participation. 2. Post Native Content (Not Just Links) Platforms prioritize content that keeps users on their app. On Instagram and Facebook: Upload videos directly Write captions natively Use carousel posts Share short-form reels If every post sends people off-platform, engagement drops. 3. Use Short-Form Video Strategically Short-form video dominates engagement metrics on: TikTok Instagram Reels Facebook Reels YouTube Shorts To increase video engagement: Hook viewers in the first 3 seconds Use subtitles Keep it concise (7–30 seconds performs well) End with a question or call-to-action The faster you grab attention, the higher the watch time. 4. Optimize Your Posting Time To increase engagement rates: Post when your audience is online Analyze platform insights Test time slots consistently Consistency beats randomness. Your audience needs predictable content patterns. 5. Write Captions That Stop the Scroll High-performing captions often include: A bold first line A relatable pain point Clear formatting (short paragraphs) A call-to-action Avoid long walls of text without spacing. Make it skimmable. Attention spans are short. 6. Encourage Saves and Shares Saves and shares are powerful engagement signals. Create content people want to reference later: How-to guides Checklists Industry tips Statistics Infographics End with: “Save this for later.” OR “Share this with a business owner.” Direct calls increase action. 7. Respond to Every Comment Engagement is a two-way street. When you reply to comments: You boost the comment thread You increase post lifespan You build relationships The more conversations happening under your post, the stronger its performance. 8. Use Strategic Hashtags To increase discoverability: Use niche-specific hashtags Combine large + mid-size + small hashtags Avoid irrelevant trending tags Hashtags help new audiences discover your content — especially on Instagram and LinkedIn. 9. Share User-Generated Content User-generated content builds credibility and increases engagement naturally. Examples: Customer testimonials Before-and-after photos Reviews Community shout-outs People engage more with real stories than polished ads. 10. Leverage Story Features Stories increase daily engagement through: Poll stickers Question boxes Quizzes Countdown timers Stories feel informal and personal, which boosts interaction. 11. Create Value-Driven Educational Content Educational content increases engagement because it provides immediate benefit. Examples: “3 Ways to Improve Your Google Visibility” “5 Mistakes Killing Your Engagement” “Beginner Guide to Social Media Marketing” Valuable content earns saves and shares. 12. Use Clear Calls-to-Action (CTAs) Don’t assume people know what to do. Tell them: Comment below Tag a friend Share your thoughts DM us for details Click the link Direct CTAs significantly increase engagement rates. 13. Maintain a Consistent Brand Voice Engagement increases when people feel familiarity. Develop: A consistent tone Recognizable visuals Repeatable content themes Consistency builds trust, and trust builds interaction. 14. Analyze What Performs Best To increase engagement long-term: Track top-performing posts Identify patterns Double down on winners Look at: Format (video, carousel, static) Topic Caption style Posting time Let data guide you, not guesswork. 15. Focus on Community, Not Just Metrics The brands that win treat social media like a relationship, not a billboard. Engage with: Followers’ content Local businesses Industry peers Comment. Support. Collaborate. Engagement is reciprocal. SEO Keywords Included in This Guide This article intentionally covers high-value search terms such as: How to increase social media engagement Improve engagement rate Boost social media reach Increase Instagram engagement Social media marketing strategy Increase Facebook engagement Social media growth tips Organic engagement strategies Optimizing blog content with targeted keywords increases discoverability in search engines like Google. Final Thoughts: Engagement Is Built, Not Hacked There’s no magic formula. But there is a system: Post value Invite conversation Respond consistently Analyze performance Repeat what works When done strategically, social media engagement compounds over time, turning casual followers into loyal customers.

  • Winter Storm Preparedness Checklist

Winter storms have a way of turning “we’ll be fine” into “why didn’t we do this sooner?”  real fast. Power outages, icy roads, frozen pipes, empty store shelves, they don’t announce themselves politely. And once a storm hits, it’s already too late to start preparing. That’s why having a Winter Storm Preparedness Checklist  isn’t overkill, it’s common sense. This guide walks you through the essentials you should have before  temperatures drop and conditions get dangerous. From emergency supplies and food basics to power, heat, and communication planning, this checklist is designed to help you stay safe, calm, and ready when winter decides to show up uninvited. Whether you live in a place that sees snow every year or you’re in an area that occasionally  gets hit hard, preparation can make the difference between a stressful emergency and a manageable inconvenience. Let’s get you winter-ready, before the forecast turns ugly. BEFORE THE STORM (24–48 HOURS AHEAD) 1. Charge all phones, power banks, tablets, and rechargeable lanterns. 2. Fill vehicle gas tanks in case stations lose power. 3. Get cash in small bills in case card systems go down. 4. Pick up prescriptions and essential medications early. 5. Download movies, books, and maps for offline use. 6. Identify one warm room in the house to “camp out” if power fails. 7. Locate water shut-off valve and breaker box now, not later. 8. Set fridge and freezer to colder settings to hold temperature longer. WATER AND PIPE PROTECTION 9. Drip faucets on exterior walls when temps drop below freezing. 10. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation. 11. Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots. 12. Cover outdoor faucets with insulated caps or towels. 13. Know how to shut off water quickly if a pipe bursts. 14. Fill jugs, buckets, or bathtub with water for flushing and washing. FOOD AND KITCHEN PREP 15. Keep 3–5 days of no-cook food: peanut butter, tuna, bread, crackers, canned meat, fruit cups. 16. Have manual can opener available. 17. Buy shelf-stable milk or powdered milk if needed. 18. Freeze a few water bottles to act as freezer “ice packs.” 19. Keep a cooler ready to move fridge food outside if power is out and temps are below freezing. 20. Avoid stocking large amounts of perishables right before the storm. HEAT AND HOME SAFETY 21. Gather extra blankets, sleeping bags, and warm layers. 22. If using a fireplace, confirm chimney is clear and have dry wood. 23. Never run generators or grills inside garages or homes. 24. Test smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors. 25. Have at least one flashlight per person plus spare batteries. 26. Use battery lanterns instead of candles when possible. VEHICLE AND TRAVEL 27. Plan to avoid driving once freezing rain begins. 28. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads freeze first. 29. Keep in the car: blanket, water, snacks, phone charger, gloves. 30. Replace old wiper blades and top off washer fluid. 31. Park away from large tree limbs when possible. 32. Assume flights and travel may be disrupted for days. POWER OUTAGE PLAN 33. Unplug sensitive electronics to avoid surge damage. 34. Keep one battery radio or weather app for updates. 35. Use surge protectors for TVs and computers. 36. Know where warming centers may be in your parish. 37. Have extension cords ready if using a generator outside. 38. Keep refrigerator closed to preserve cold air. PETS AND LIVESTOCK 39. Bring pets indoors with extra food and water. 40. Provide outdoor animals with unfrozen water sources. 41. Add straw or blankets to outdoor shelters. 42. Keep leashes and carriers accessible in case of evacuation. MEDICAL AND SPECIAL NEEDS 43. Keep a written list of medications and dosages. 44. Store a small first-aid kit with thermometer and basic meds. 45. Have backup batteries for medical devices. 46. Identify a place with power you could relocate to if needed. PROPERTY PROTECTION 47. Move vehicles away from trees or power lines. 48. Secure outdoor furniture and lightweight items. 49. Avoid trimming trees during the storm—do it beforehand. 50. Photograph property for insurance before conditions worsen. DURING THE STORM 51. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary. 52. Assume downed lines are live and dangerous. 53. Use only safe indoor heating methods. 54. Check on neighbors, especially elderly, by phone if possible. 55. Report outages to utility companies rather than 911 unless it’s an emergency. AFTER THE STORM 56. Walk carefully, ice may refreeze overnight. 57. Check pipes for leaks as temperatures rise. 58. Throw out refrigerated food if above 40°F for more than 4 hours. 59. Avoid DIY electrical repairs around downed lines. 60. Be patient, restoring power after ice can take several days. Buffalo Wild Wings checks a lot of boxes: Big screens everywhere, so you never miss the action A deep lineup of wing sauces and flavors Cold drinks, shareable appetizers, and crowd-pleasers A laid-back atmosphere that works for families, friends, and game nights It’s the kind of spot that turns into a regular hangout, whether you’re there for football, basketball, UFC, or just an excuse to argue over which sauce reigns supreme. Where It’ll Be The restaurant is expected to land near Muirfield Bend Drive along SH-130 , an area seeing major retail and dining growth. That puts it within easy reach for Hutto residents and makes it a convenient stop for anyone traveling through the north Austin metro. Buffalo Wild Wings will be located at 2270 Muirfield Drive. What It Says About Hutto’s Growth This isn’t just another restaurant opening. It’s a sign that Hutto is hitting a new stage, one where national brands see real value in planting roots here. New restaurants mean more jobs, more options close to home, and more reasons to stay local instead of driving elsewhere for a night out. As development continues, Hutto is quickly becoming a place where you can eat well, watch the game, and meet up with friends, without ever needing to leave town. September 2026 can’t get here fast enough. Want to keep up with everything coming to Hutto? Find the latest Hutto news on our page .
